Our first day in Ibiza, my friend, Mallory, and I barely managed to drag ourselves out of bed by 4 p.m. After managing to do so, we made our way to Benirras beach on the northern part of the island via a rented 50 cc moped.

The cove seemed to harbor more gravel than sand, but the view of the sun dipping into the ocean set to the rhythm of drum beats more than made up for the less than perfect texture of the beach.

After sunset, we shot down to Aura, a restaurant/club nestled on a stretch of road between Santa Getrudis and Eivissa. Stick with the bar food- it's delicious. As was our waiter.

Now why didn't I think of that?

When I decided to incorporate Ibiza into my Barcelona , I knew I wanted kick it in the chic bohemian scene on the northern part of the island. (I've been told the town of of Eivissa is a bit tacky and somewhat tainted by the proliferation of drug-addled eurotrash) Agrotourism boutique hotels like Atzaro are out of the price range of most college kids, but I was still determined to lock down gypsetter-worthy accommodations. This is where Airbnb.com came in.

"Called the "Ebay for space" by Time Magazine, Airbnb is an online marketplace allowing anyone from private residents to commercial properties to rent out their extra space. The reputation-based site allows for user reviews, verification, and secure online transactions. Listings include vacation rentals, private rooms, entire apartments, bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels, castles, treehouses, and many other traditional and non-traditional accommodations.

The open platform allows users to post listings of their space. Prospective travelers can search by city or country, utilizing filters such as price and room type to find exactly what suits their needs. Travelers contact hosts directly through the web site, which includes user profiles and friend recommendations. Dates are confirmed through on-site messaging, and the traveler books directly online using their credit card or PayPal account. Hosts receive a reservation request which they can accept or decline. Both parties then receive an itinerary on accepted reservations, and are set to go."

Trolling through airbnb.com, I found this little gem, a bedroom with private bath in a darling finca for $65 night. It's super close to the picturesque town of Santa Gertrudis and is within a 20 minute drive of anyplace one could possibly want to go. The British couple that lives there is picking us up at the airport for a fraction of what it would cost to take a taxi and seems willing to go above and beyond to see that my friend and I get the lay of the land.

Despite Johnny Depp's and Benicio del Toro's brilliant (and reportedly highly accurate portrayals) of Hunter Thompson and Oscar Acosta, I didn't love the movie; it made the story seem to dark. The book reads much funnier, like laugh-out-loud funny. So if you didn't like the movie, try the book. If you've never been introduced to either, read the book before seeing the film.

Crashed at India House, a hostel in New Orleans, on the trek back from Miami. Can't wait to stop there again in August on the way back to school, and when I go to Mardi Gras in 2012, I will definitely plan waaayyy in advance so I can snag a bed at this bohemian party pad.

There's a stop literally within 200 ft. of India House. All it takes is $1.25 and a little patience, and the Canal St. trolley will take you within walking distance of any place you'd want to go in the French Quarter.

There's all kinds of murals scattered over the walls.

I crawled into bed in the dark so as to minimize disruption to my fellow anonymous roommates. This is the first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning.

After we got back from dinner and meandering in the French Quarter, we chilled out back while checking e-mails and returning phone calls. Linger there for more than a few minutes and before ya know it, you could be chatting with a second string British soccer player or listening to a Ph.D student explain how a relative accidentally decapitated himself with a chainsaw.

Cleaned out my closet a little in preparation to pack up to go back to Texas. Dropped a bag of stuff off at Lotus House. Came home with this patchwork vest and Route 66 shirt that looks like it it was previously owned by a hillbilly prostitute with poor dexterity-it's cut and ripped in the most bizarre fashion. Both pieces are going to take some work. The vest needs about four inches taken in on each side and the shirt might have to be tie-dyed; it has some mysterious stains. The duds only set me back about $4 total, so I'm willing to invest a little more in them.

I saw The Runaways last weekend. The costumes in the film were phenomenal and very accurate based on pictures of the real Runaways that I've seen. Downloaded Bad Reputation and You Don't Own Me when I got home. Obviously I already had I Love Rock n Roll.

Checked into The Standard for Easter weekend, and it is now my favorite hotel in Miami. Dogs lounge with their owners by pool. All kinds of boats are constantly pulling up to the dock. The bathtubs are on the balconies. The lobby decor is kind of 60's mod California. The hamman spa is pure bliss, and open til midnight. Everything about it is incredibly groovy.

Over Spring Break I read Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test about Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. It made me want to stock up on Day Glow, buy and refurbish some type of large retro vehicle, and hit the road. Minus the the whole LSD- turning-the-brain-into-mush thing, it sounds like it was a wonderfully colorful scene that included people ranging from the literati of Stanford University to Hell's Angels.

There are four people I idolize: Jane Goodall, Greg Mortensen, Julia Chaplin, and Chelsea Handler. I saw Greg Mortensen (author of Three Cups of Tea and living proof that one person can make a difference) speak last year, and this weekend I sacrificed the majority of Ultra's Friday lineup (including Tiesto and David Guetta) in order to go to Chelsea's book signing at Books & Books and her stand-up show at The Fillmore. If you can, go see her show before you read the latest book; she recycles a lot of material. It doesn't make her any less hilarious...you just lose some of the element of surprise.

Two down, two to go. Jane Goodall should probably be next target- she isn't exactly young.

Miami Film Festival and the Winter Party festivities are this weekend, and I'm stuck cramming for Physics and Finance tests. There are a few films that I'm going to make an effort to see eventually thanks to the alluring summaries in the Miami New Times.

Nobody Knows About the Persian Cats

In this rare Iranian entry to MIFF, Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi takes us through the underground music scene in Tehran, where all Western-style music is prohibited. Based on real people, places, and events, the film follows Negar Shaghaghi and Ashkan Koshanejad of the indie band Take It Easy Hospital (yes, a real band) as the members attempt to leave home to play a concert in London. They're escorted by a smooth-talking linchpin of the black market, Nader (Hamed Behdad), who promises to find them passports, visas, and additional bandmates Ghobadi switches to fast-cut music video montages as they audition musicians. Each genre matches up with a different side of life in Tehran: When the heavy metal sounds, we see breakneck traffic. Blues rock depicts refugee children sleeping on the streets. Yet Tehran's indie rock scene looks a lot like ours. Take It Easy Hospital exchanges secret copies of British music magazine NME with other bands, the musicians wear CBGB T-shirts alongside women in burqas, and at one point, Askhan says his greatest wish is to go to Iceland to see the band Sigur Rós play. The film, with its MTV-style music video montages and pop culture references, runs the risk of feeling like a lighthearted documentary. But in the final ten minutes, the tour through Iranian rock makes an abrupt and disturbing turn. The film, which won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, was co-written by Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, who was sentenced to eight years in jail in 2008 after the Iranian government deemed her a spy. Blood and Rain

A few hours after midnight, a man and a woman meet randomly on the cold, wet streets of Bogotá. He's Jorge (Quique Mendoza), a taxi driver whose brother was mysteriously murdered. She's Angela (Gloria Montoya), a sexy but emotionally damaged party girl with out-of-control coke and liquor habits. Gradually, as chance events and targeted violence bring the pair closer, a strange but undeniable attraction develops.
In his first feature, director Jorge Navas leads the characters (and viewers) on a slow, methodical descent into the Colombian underworld, from after-hours clubs and strip joints to killing fields. Blood and Rain depicts a dark sphere of existence, where chaos reigns, outbursts of brutal violence are common, deeply irrational behavior is the norm, and drugs are eaten to erase bad memories.
But it's not bleak. One of the reasons is the luridly bright nightscape photography of Juan Carlos Gil, who soaks the streets of Bogotá in saturated blacks and warm yellows that make abandoned lots and trash-filled alleys seem beautiful. Then there's the acting: Both Mendoza and Montoya deliver human performances that redeem profoundly fucked-up characters. And finally, consider Navas's clarity of vision. Born into the itinerant life of a con artist, Kay (Aida Folch) is a sexy but street-tough young woman who has helped her father, Sebas (Manuel Morón), run scams since she learned to walk. For years, they've lived off small scores, skipping from one city to the next across Spain. But after 16 months in Barcelona, Kay and Sebas have begun to settle into a routine: She steals cars while he fences jewelry. It's almost normal.
Then, suddenly, Mexican gangsters return to collect an overdue debt. Sebas begins plotting a big job that involves a crew of crooked cops, a large bag of stolen jewels, an incriminating videotape, and a cable news network. Meanwhile, Kay gets caught stealing a BMW and escapes only with the help of Abel (Francesc Garrido), a fighter. Together, all three then chase the most monumental score of their lives.
Written and directed by first-time Spanish filmmaker Patxi Amézcua, this action thriller is more conventional than many of the other movies at this year's festival. In tone and style, 25 Carat draws from similar genre films such as Luc Besson's The Professional and Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run. However, Amézcua delivers his story with full knowledge of its sources, so it never seems derivative. Not to mention, 25 Carat is plotted so tightly, edited with such energy, and acted so deftly that it pays off in almost every way. It even has a happy ending. More or less. S. Pajot

My rommate brought home a pair of these Reef's weekend. The beads are handmade out of recycled paper by female entrepreneurs in Uganda- a very boss concept, don't ya think? Speaking of Uganda, another great organization is Invisible Children. A group of college guys have made several wonderfully done documentaries about the rebel army's practice of kidnapping children and forcing them to become child soldiers. The organization works to pressure lawmakers around the world to intervene on behalf of the kids.

A couple weeks ago, Julia Chaplin put out a gypset reading list on her website (gypset.com). I'm proud to say I'd already read a few on the list, including On the Road by Jack Kerouac and the biography on Jane Digby. Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem, a collection of stories and essays written in the mid to late 60s, was one of the few books on the list that I was able to get from the UM library. Didion's writing style is gorgeous, but she's such a downer. The story I liked best was "Where the Kissing Never Stops", centered around Joan Baez.

Saturday I took her to South Beach. We had lunch at D'vine Hookah Lounge on Lincoln Road and she found a great paisley maxi dress at Alvin's Island on the corner of Lincoln and Collins. Once you get past all the touristy t-shirts, they actually have some really cute dresses towards the back left corner of the store.

Saturday night, we initially tried to go see Amanda Blank at the Electric Pickle down in the Design District, but it was a $10 cover and we got kind of intimated by the hard core looking people walking ahead of us... So we just went to the Crazy Pianos located within Cocowalk. Crazy Pianos is always fun, but I stumped the cover band with my request for Rockin' the Suburbs by Ben Folds. I wish I would have requested Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by the Police instead.

The full moon drum circle in Miami Beach was rockin' this Saturday night. It is quite possibly the most fun thing I've done in Miami ever, and I can't wait to go again. "Nikangel's Plastic Temptation" by Angelica Belin is at the Wallflower Gallery in Miami until Feb. 26th.

I could totally see something similar to these mannequins being used in a trendy/edgy resale shop or to display clothing pieces for online vintage clothing stores. I mean, wouldn't you click on a thumbnail image of an outfit that appeared to be modeled by a blue person with brightly colored hair?

Over the summer I read a biography on Jane Digby. She was the ultimate rebel, way before it was cool, spending the later part of her life split between Damascus and the Syrian desert with her sheik husband . Initially she went to Syria for a little adventure and to find a new horse. Obviously her plans changed, but what a great idea! If I was to ever buy a horse, I'd want to go to Syria (hitting Damascus, Palmyra and Beirut, Lebanon) and get a dappled Arabian from an actual Arabic person.

But then I'd outfit it with Moroccan-style gear, because it's just so awesome.

Went to Morocco the summer before last...

The tanneries of Fes. Stayed at the Palais Jamai. Fes is definitely the most authentic/least westernized city we went to.

Marrakech is kind of overwhelming.Sadly, La Mamounia was closed for renovation at the time we were there. I want to go back so I can take my time and check out more things.

Essaouira: It's actually kinda chilly due to the wind, which also makes it a phenomenal kite surfing spot. I recommend getting a jacket there; that's what I did. (see below)

It was nice to end the trip with chillin' at Essaouira after the craziness of Marrakech and the Djemaa el Fna

Went to the F.I.G. v.i.p preview party last night in Dallas (for free!). It's where boutiques and suppliers get together for the weekend to unload unsold seasonal merchandise at 50-75% off. I got this amazing black and white cropped sweater jacket by Central Park West for $60, a badass black motorcycle jacket by My Tribe, and a strapless brown striped maxi dress by Tylie Malibu.

I'm going to wear the sweater jacket tonight for dinner at Five Sixty (I hear the Surf 'n' Turf sushi roll is amazing) and then to the Mav's game!

Assouline publishes the chicest books in existence. It is touted as "the fashion crowd's favorite publisher." I already own Gypset Style (see my first post ever) and Be My Guest.

These are the next three I'd like to get: To India with Love, Adventure Hotel Stories, and In the Spirit of Miami Beach. I'll buy used copies on Amazon where they're a heck of a lot cheaper.

Went to Si for dinner with my friend Rachel a few nights ago. It's quite quaint and the food is delectable, but I need to go back when the weather is better so I can sit outside on the back porch to better appreciate the awesome view of the downtown Dallas skyline. If you go, be sure to try the sangria.

So this is the view I've been waking up to the past few days while staying with one of my "aunts" in Jersey City. The ferry is the most fun way to get into the city.

I saw two plays while there: In the Heights and Hair. In the Heights has won a few Tony awards and such, but I didn't love it. It didn't have any catchy songs and the subject matter (immigrants living in the barrio) stressed and bummed me out.

Hair, on the other hand, was a blast. Warning: It is not for the easily embarrassed or conservative types. The actors interact with the crowd in hilarious and unexpected ways, and there's a scene where all the characters just get naked.

I coordinated my outfit with the play by wearing a vintage suede fringe vest that I cajoled my mom into passing down to me.

At the end, the audience is invited to get on stage and dance with cast. FYI: There is alcohol served during intermission if you need a little confidence boost to dance onstage.

At The ENK show at the Piers we found these Chan Luu tops among other things, and of course picked out half a dozen of the fabulous wrap bracelets that she does. Will be available at Turtletique soon.

My mom picked out some cool buckles/belts from R.U. Swanky?. She was nice enough to get me this Indian head model.

Next time I go to NY, I'd love to stay at The Jane.

Had lunch last weekend at Hunky's in the Bishop Arts District (Dallas) with one of my favorite people. Epiphany and Make are my favorite stores down in that area. I showed immense restraint and just bought this one bitchin' satchel from Epiphany. I carried it with me all over The City this week; it's the perfect size for phone+camera+cash+cards.

Up Helly Aa

Maybe the Vikings get a bad rap. Maybe instead of pillaging and terrorizing, they just wanted to have fun. That’s certainly the impression everyone visiting the remote Shetland Islands in Britain would get if their trip coincided with the yearly Up Helly Aa festival in January. The Shetlands were invaded and ruled by the Vikings for hundreds of years, but residents must either have short memories or not think their Norse rulers were too harsh, because the festival today involves getting dressed up in Viking garb and partying like it is 899. Some say that although it has murky origins, Up Helly Aa was begun to curb boisterous holiday celebrations. Well, if that’s done by encouraging a raucous day-and-night party with dress-up Vikings wielding axes that culminates with a torchlight parade through town and the ceremonial immolation of a Viking longship, then mission accomplished.
